约翰·弥尔顿(John Milton,1608-1674),英国诗人、思想家、政论家,民主斗士。弥尔顿是清教徒文学的代表,他一生为资产阶级民主运动而奋斗,参加宗教和政治论战,发表不少政论文,其中反对书报审查制的《论出版自由》最为有名。后因劳累过度双目失明,口述完成使他名扬后世的三部伟大著作:《失乐园》(1667),《复乐园》(1671)和《力士参孙》(1671)。《失乐园》共12卷,取材自《圣经·旧约·创世记》,描述撒旦引诱亚当和夏娃偷尝禁果而被逐出伊甸园的故事,是弥尔顿最有名的代表作,也是英国文学中一部极其重要的杰出史诗,与《荷马史诗》《神曲》并称为西方三大诗歌。
John Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608, and studied at the University of Cambridge. He originally planned to become a clergyman, but abandoned those ambitions to become a poet. Political in his writings, he served a government post during the time of the Commonwealth. In 1651, he went completely blind but he continued to write, finishing Paradise Lost in 1667, and Paradise Regained in 1671. He died in 1674.
Christopher Ricks is professor of humanities at Boston University and most recently author of Dylan’s Visions of Sin.
Susanne Woodsis a Provost and Professor of English at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, and Chair of the professional Northeast Milton Seminar. Her doctorate is from Columbia University and she has taught at the University of Hawaii, Franklin & Marshall College, and at Brown University, where she maintains an affiliation. Her books include Natural Emphasis: English Versification from Chaucer to Dryden (1984), and Lanyer: A Renaissance Woman Poet (1999), and she has published numerous articles on Milton and other English renaissance poets.
Fay Weldon wasbrought up in New Zealand and returned to the United Kingdom when she was fifteen. She read Economics and Psychology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and worked briefly for the Foreign Office in London, then as a journalist, and thenas an advertising copywriter. Her first novel,The Fat Woman’s Joke, was published in 1967. Fay Weldon’s work includes more than twenty novels, five collections of short stories, several children’s books, nonfiction books, magazine articles, and a number of plays written for television, radio, and the stage, including the pilot episode for the television seriesUpstairs Downstairs. In 2001 she was awarded a CBE.
