“Dante and Shakespeare Divide the world between them —There is no third.” — T. S. Eliot
Belonging in theimmortalcompany of the works of Homer,Virgil, Milton, and Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri’s poetic masterpiece is a moving human drama, an unforgettable visionary journey through the infinite torment of Hell, a supreme expression of the Middle Ages, a glorification of the ways of God, and a magnificent protestagainst the ways in which men have thwarted the divine plan. One of the few literary works which has enjoyed a fame both immediate and enduring,The Inferno remains powerful after seven centuries. It confronts the most universal values—good and evil, free will and predestination—while remaining intensely personal and ferociously political, for it was born out of the anguish of a man who saw human life blighted by the injustice and corruption of his times.
InThe Purgatorio, Dante describes his journey to the renunciation of sin, accepting his suffering in preparation for his coming into the presence of God. This brilliant translation of Dante’s canticle crystallizes thepower and beauty inherent in thegreat poet’s immortal conception of the aspiring soul.
InThe Paradiso, the final canticle inThe Divine Comedy, Dante shares the ultimate goal of human striving: the merging of individual destiny with universal order. One of the towering creations of world literature, this epic discovery of sublime truth is a work of almost mystical intensity—an immortal hymn to God, Nature, Eternity, and above all,“the Love that moves the Sun and the other stars.”
“It is not possible to say how much we owe to him, because his splendor blinds our eyes… Always he was near to God.” — Michelangelo
“A poem of wild andinteresting images… a good instance… of that soul of universal significance in a true poet’s compositions in addition to the specific meaning.” — Samuel Taylor Coleridgre
“Fresh and sharp...I think [Ciardi’s] version of Dante will be in many respects the best we have seen.”—John Crowe Ransom
Considered Italy’s greatest poet,Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was the scion of a Florentine family who mastered the art of lyric poetry at an early age. His first major work,La VitaNuova (1292), was a tribute to Beatrice Portinari, the great love of his life. Dante’s political activism resulted in his being exiled from Florence, and he eventually settled in Ravenna. It is believed thatThe Divine Comedy—comprising three canticles,The Inferno,The Purgatorio, andThe Paradiso—was written between 1308 and 1320.
John Ciardi(1916-86), a distinguished poet and professor, taught at Harvard and Rutgers universities and served as poetry editor of theSaturday Review. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Institute of Arts and Letters.-In 1955, he won the Harriet Monroe Memorial Award and the Prix de Rome in 1956.《但丁神曲1:地狱篇》
