The Mysterious Island《
Armed with little more thantheircourage and ingenuity, five Union prisoners escaped the siege of Richmond , Virginiabut not by steamboat, by train, or even on foot. Instead, these desperate but resourceful souls construct a hot-air balloon and climb aboardwith no idea if they will ever see civilization again. Swept off course by a raging storm, they land on the shores of an uncharted island.
Thus begins a classic fable of men coming face-to face with the forces of nature, which are by turns harsh and generous, In these conditions, an engineer, his faithful servant, a journalist, a sailor, and a boy of fifteen must undertake the huge, if not impossible, task of reconstructing the civilization they left behind. Filled with action,The Mysterious Island has gripped countless readers with its intrigue and knuckle-whitening suspense, and continues to compel us today.
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY BRUCE STERLING
AND AN AFTERWORD BY ISAAC ASIMOV
Review
“The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived.” —Arthur C. Clarke
Particularly clever. —Isaac Asimov

With little more than courage and ingenuity, five Union prisoners escaped the siege of Richmond-by hot-air balloon. They have no idea if they’ll ever see civilization again-especially when they’re swept off by a raging storm to the shores of an uncharted island.

Jules Verne(1828-1905) was the author of innumerable adventurestories that combined a vivid imagination with a gift for popularizing science. Although he studied law at Paris, he devoted his life entirely to writing. His most popular stories,in addition toThe Mysterious Island (1874) ,include: Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863),A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864); A Trip to the Moon (1865); Around the World in Eighty Days (1872); and Michael Strogoff (1876). In addition, he was the author of a number of successful plays, as well as a popular history of exploration from Phoenician times to the mid-nineteenth century, The Discovery of the Earth (1878-80).
Bruce Sterling, author, journalist, editor, and critic, has written eight science fiction novels and three short storycollections. He edited the anthology Mirrorshades, the definitive document of the cyberpunk movement, and wrote the non-fiction booksThe Hacker Crackdown: Lawand Disorderon The Electronic Frontier (1992) and Tomorrow Now:Envisioningthe Next Fifty Years (2003). A contributing editor of Wired magazine, he also writes a Web log and runs a Web site and Internet mailing list on the topics of environmental activism and postindustrial design.
Isaac Asimovwas the author of more than for hundred books, including three Hugo Award winners and numerous bestsellers, as well as countless stories and scientific essays. Award the honor of Grand Master of Science Fiction by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1985, he is the man who coined the words robotics, positronic, and psychohistory.

“Are we rising again?” “No. On the contrary.” “Are we descending?” “Worse than that, captain! we are falling!” “For Heaven’s sake heave out the ballast!” “There! The last sack is empty!” “Does the balloon rise?” “No!” “I hear a noise like the dashing of waves. The sea is below the car! It cannot be more than 500 feet from us!” “Overboard with every weight!... everything!”
Such were the loud and startling words which resounded through the air, above the vast watery desert of the Pacific, about four oclock in the evening of the 23rd of March, 1865.
Few can possibly have forgotten the terrible storm from the northeast, in the middle of the equinox of that year. The tempest raged without intermission from the 18th to the 26th of March. Its ravages were terrible in America, Europe, and Asia, covering a distance of eighteen hundred miles, and extending obliquely to the equator from the thirty-fifth north parallel to the fortieth south parallel. Towns were overthrown, forests uprooted, coasts devastated by the mountains of water which were precipitated on them, vessels cast on the shore, which the published accounts numbered by hundreds, whole districts leveled by waterspouts which destroyed everything they passed over, several thousand people crushed on land or drowned at sea; such were the traces of its fury, left by this devastating tempest. It surpassed in disasters those which so frightfully ravaged Havana and Guadalupe, one on the 25th of October, 1810, the other on the 26th of July, 1825.
