c: Al Green was born in Forrest City, Arkansas in 1946. By the age of nine, he was already performing with his brothers in a gospel quartet called The Green Brothers. They played many shows in the south of the US. When he was 16, he started an R&B group, Al Green and the Creations, with several friends from his high school. They later changed their name to The Soul Mates and their first single, ‘Back Up Train’ became a surprise hit, climbing to number five on the R&B charts early in 1968. However, the band never managed to have another hit and in 1969 Al Green became a solo artist. Over the next few years, Al released a number of albums, each one becoming more successful than the previous one. He also enjoyed seven consecutive gold singles during this time. On October 18, 1974, Green’s life was hit by personal tragedy when his girlfriend killed herself after an argument at his home. Green says that this incident was a turning point in his life and in 1976 he became a pastor at his local church. He continued to release albums but his popularity was in decline. In 1979 he suffered an accident while on stage and he took this as a sign to stop recording soul music and concentrate solely on gospel music. He returned to popular music in 1988 when he recorded ‘Put a Little Love In Your Heart’ with Annie Lennox for the film Scrooged. Since then Al Green has continued to release both popular and

6. a: Speaker 1: A strange thing happened to me the other day …

Speaker 2: Yeah? What was that?

Speaker 1: Well, I was just walking down the road from my place, down towards the town centre, I just needed, erm, I was going to, to the bank and I needed to get a bit of money and buy a couple of things, and I was listening to some music onthe MP3 player and sort of singing along a bit. And there was this song called ‘Good People’,

it’s by, er, Jack Johnson.

Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I know that one. It’s good, eh?

Speaker 1: Yeah it’s, I mean, I really like it. Anyway, I look over to the other side of the road and there’s a man trying to push his car over to the side of the road, he’s broken down, you know, and he’s trying to get his car out of the traffic, and he’s doing it on his own …

Speaker 2: Wow, that’s tough …

Speaker 1: Yeah, steering and pushing at the same time, it’s not easy. And anyway, I thought that, I thought, you know, about the song I was listening to, you know, ‘Good People’ and he sings ‘Where did all the good people go?’ and I thought ‘Good question!’

Speaker 2: Right!

Speaker 1: Yeah, and I kind of thought, ‘Come on, why not? If that was me, I’d love someone to come and help me push the car,’ so I crossed over and went up to him and said ‘Can I give you a hand?’ and he said ‘Yeah, thanks mate, if you give the car a push maybe it’ll start’ so I said ‘OK’. Then the guy looked inside the car and said ‘Go

and help him to push,’ and I didn’t know who he was talking to at first but then this small boy got out of the car and came to the back beside me. He was only about ten I think, a little kid, you know, so I said ‘Come on, let’s get your dad’s car going – let’s push!’ and we started pushing and the car kind of started to move a bit …

Speaker 2: Where was the man?

Speaker 1: Oh he was back inside the car behind the wheel, of course. Anyway, after about 50 metres pushing, I don’t know, maybe 50 or 60 metres, the car started! Great! So I stood up and then the man leaned out of the window and shouted ‘You! Get back in the car!’ and the little boy ran and jumped in. And I started to walk up to the driver’s window to say something – and the guy just drove away! I was so surprised! No wave, no ‘Thank you’, no nothing!

Speaker 2: You’re kidding!

Speaker 1: No, honestly – there I am, standing in the middle of the road, all hot and sweaty, I’ve helped him get his car started, and he just drives away!! I mean, can you believe it!

Speaker 2: So you’ll never push a car again then?

Speaker 1: Oh, no, I’d do it again. I mean, not everyone’s like that, are they? You can’t stop trying to help just because some people are horrible!

Speaker 2: I suppose not, but even so, it’s kind of … The correct order is: picture A, B, F, D, E, C. Pictures G and H are not used.
