The Tale of White Dew

Once upon a time in ancient China, the period of White Dew was divided into three phases: first, the arrival of the wild geese; second, the mysterious birds return; and third, the flocks of birds begin their rest. Among these phases, the first one, the arrival of the wild geese, has an enchanting legend. Let's dive into this story together.

Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor had a beautiful maiden by his side, known for her radiant beauty and snow-white skin. People affectionately called her "Su Nu," meaning "Pure Maiden." Su Nu was a master of the harp. Whenever she played, magical birds couldn’t help but fly over, singing along with the notes. Even phoenixes would dance gracefully to her melodies, and mystic trees would blossom in delight.

Among the Yellow Emperor’s generals was a brave warrior named Da Hong. He was unique, possessing a pair of wings that could carry him thousands of miles. Da Hong was deeply in love with Su Nu. Often, he would spread his wings, taking Su Nu on flights over breathtaking landscapes. While they marveled at nature's beauty, Su Nu would play her harp and sing for Da Hong. It didn’t take long for their love story to reach the Yellow Emperor, who blessed and wedded them. The two lived happily ever after.

But as all tales go, happiness was short-lived. A war broke out between the Yellow Emperor and the formidable Chi You. Da Hong was called to battle. Before leaving, the couple exchanged tearful goodbyes. Su Nu, tears streaming down her face, said, "My love, Chi You is fierce and powerful. Please be careful. I'll be waiting for your return." Da Hong nodded, embraced Su Nu tightly, and left.

From that day, Su Nu missed him terribly. She would often visit their favorite spots, playing her harp, waiting. After what seemed like an eternity, the war ended. Eagerly, Su Nu awaited Da Hong's return. But instead of a reunion, she received news of his death in battle.

Heartbroken, Su Nu played her harp at the place of Da Hong's demise, expressing her deep sorrow. Her melodies were so touching that they moved heaven and earth. While she was playing one day, a wild goose flew down from the sky. Su Nu instantly knew it was Da Hong. Without hesitation, she dropped her harp and turned into a goose, flying away with him.

Touched by their love story, the Yellow Emperor honored the wild goose as a messenger, allowing it to carry letters for lovers all around the world.
