An artifact, according to the dictionary, is“an object created by a human being for a practical purpose, especially: an object remaining from a particular period, trend, or individual, typically an item of cultural or historical importance.” The artifacts that populated the wizarding world of Harry Potter films, which in filmmaking terms we’d call props—from books and clocks to mirrors and trucks—served many purposes, the less of which was as props and set dressing. Many of these would considered“hero props”, another film term that refers to those special things handled by the heroes, and which are, in fact, important to the character and the story. These ranged from a map with endless layers that showed a rat (both in physical form and traitorous actions) walking around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to a small piece of jewelry that could turn back time, and in that turns, save two lives.
