At least 5000 years old, the I Ching is a book of oracles containing the whole of human experience. Used for divination, it is a method of exploring the unconscious; through the symbolism of its hexagrams we are guided towards the solution of difficult problems and life situations. I Ching or Book of Changes《易经》讲的是人谋,不是神谋、鬼谋。整部作品始终贯穿着人的因素起决定作用的思想观念,认为人的品德修养、人的主观努力可以逢凶化吉,促使事物发生变化,相信人谋在改造环境,促使事物转化时所起到的作用。
有人认为《易经》是讲算卦的书,宣扬了封建迷信;或是以不知为知,简单地认为占卜、算卦等于迷信。殊不知,占卜之于迷信,正像宗教之于巫术一样,是人类思想史上的一大进步。《易经》是中国农耕文明的产物,是中国古代先民的智慧结晶,在《易经》中,没有“批八字”、“看手相”的内容,有的却是对中国古代君子提出的要求,是君子的人生指南。本书将其翻译、评点,力求寻觅出这些有价值的东西,古为今用,使《易经》成为我们的人生指南。
卫礼贤,原名为理查德·威廉(Richard Wilhelm),来中国后取名卫希圣,字礼贤,亦作尉礼贤。1873年10月10日,他出生于斯图加特。德国汉学研究影响较大的人物当推卫礼贤,他是魏玛差会的传教士。在他57年的生活道路中,有20多个年头是在中国度过的,他以一名传教士的身份来到青岛,转而将兴趣和精力投向办教育、办医院,从而踏入探究中国传统文化的门径。卫礼贤翻译出版了《老子》、《庄子》和《列子》等道家著作,还著有《实用中国常识》、《老子与道教》、《中国的精神》、《中国文化史》、《东方——中国文化的形成和变迁》、《中国哲学》等等,他是中西文化交流史上“中学西播”的一位功臣。
Richard Wilhelm (10 May 1873 – 2 March 1930) was a German sinologist, theologian, and missionary. He lived in China for 25 years, became fluent in spoken and written Chinese, and grew to love and admire the Chinese people. He is best remembered for his translations of philosophical works from Chinese into German that in turn have been translated into other major languages of the world, including English. His translation of the I Ching is still regarded as one of the finest, as is his translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower; both were provided with introductions by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who was a personal friend.
The first hexagram is made up of six unbroken lines. These unbroken lines stand for the primal power, which is light- giving, active, strong, and of the spirit. The hexagram is consistently strong in character, and since it is without weakness, its essence is power or energy. Its image is heaven. Its energy is represented as unrestricted by any fixed conditions in space and is therefore conceived of as motion. Time is regarded as the basis of this motion. Thus the hexagram includes also the power of time and the power of persisting in time, that is, duration.
The power represented by the hexagram is to be interpreted in a dual sense—in terms of its action on the universe and of its action on the world of men. In relation to the universe, the hexagram expresses the strong, creative action of the Deity. In relation to the hum-an world, it denotes the creative action of the holy man or sage, of the ruler or leader of men, who through his power awakens and develops their higher nature.
THE JUDGMENT
THE CREATIVE works sublime success,
Furthering through perseverance.
According to the original meaning, the attributes [sublimity, potentiality of success, power to further, perseverance] are paired. When an individual draws this oracle, it means that success will come to him from the primal depths of the universe and that everything depends upon his seeking his happiness and that of others in one way only, that is, by perseverance in what is right.
The specific meanings of the four attributes became the subject of speculation at an early date. The Chinese word here rendered by “sublime” means literally “head,”“origin,”“great.” This is why Confucius says in explaining it: “Great indeed is the generating power of the Creative; all beings owe their beginning to it. This power permeates all heaven.” For this attribute inheres in the other three as well.
The beginning of all things lies still in the beyond in the form of ideas that have yet to become real. But the Creative furthermore has power to lend form to these arch etypes of ideas. This is indicated in the word success, and the process is represented by an image from nature: “The clouds pass and the rain does its work, and all individual beings flow into their forms.”
