Arthur Rimbaud, born in 1854 in Charleville, France, is hailed as the father of Symbolism. His most famous works of poetry include The Drunken Boat and A Season in Hell. He died in 1891. Paul Schmidt was, in addition to a translator, a playwright, actor, and author of two books of poetry. He taught for many years at Yale University and died in 1999.

The sun was hot; and yet it scarcely lighted the earth any longer; as a torch placed within a gigantic vault lights it by only a feeble gleam, so the sun, the earthly torch, extinguished itself while letting escape from its fiery body a final and feeble gleam, that nonetheless still showed the green leaves of the trees, the little flowers beginning to fade, and the gigantic summits of the pines, the poplars, and the century-old oaks. The cooling wind, that is to say a cool breeze, moved the leaves of the trees with a rustling somewhat similar to the sound that came from the silvery waters of the stream at my feet. The ferns bent their green faces before the wind. I fell asleep, having first quenched my thirst with the water of the stream.
I dreamed that… I had been born in Rheims, in the year 1503.
Rheims was then a small city, or better yet a town, nevertheless renowned because of its beautiful cathedral, a reminder of the coronation of King Clovis.
My parents were not rich, but very respectable: all they owned was a little house which had always belonged to them and, in addition, a few thousand francs to which must be added the small sums derived from my mother’s economies.
My father was an officer in the King’s Army. He was a tall man, thin, with dark hair, and beard, eyes and skin of the same color. Although he was barely forty-eight or fifty years old when I was born, one would have certainly said that he was sixty or fifty-eight. His character was quick, fiery, and he was often angry and would not stand for anything that displeased him.
My mother was quite different: a sweet, quiet woman, upset at very little, and yet maintaining perfect order in the house. She was so quiet that my father used to make her laugh like a young lady. I was the one they loved most. My brothers were not so brave as I was, and yet they were bigger. I did not much like to study, that is to say to learn to read, towrite, and to count. But to help around the house, to work in the garden or to do errands, that was something different, I liked that.
