After aimlessly studying in Europe at his family’s expense, he returns to Shanghai armed with a bogus degree from a fake university. On the liner back, Fang’s life becomes deeply entangled with those of two Chinese beauties— when he does finally make it home, he obtains a teaching post at a newly established university, encounters effete pseudo-intellectuals, and falls into a marriage of disastrous proportions.
    A glorious tale of love, marriage, war, calamity, disillusionment and hope, this is one of the greatest Chinese novels, combining Eastern philosophy, Western traditions, adventure, tragicomedy and satire to create a unique feast of delights. 

Fortress Besieged《围城》是钱钟书仅有的一部长篇小说，堪称中国现当代长篇小说的经典。小说塑造了抗战开初一类知识分子的群像，生动反映了在国家特定时期，特殊人群的行为操守、以及困惑。从另一个角度记述了当时的情景、氛围。虽然有具体的历史背景，但这部小说揭示的只是人群的弱点，在今天依然能够引起人们的共鸣。第1版于1947年由上海晨光出版公司出版。《围城》是中国现代文学史上一部风格独特的讽刺小说。被誉为“新儒林外史”。 

钱钟书，原名仰先，字哲良，字默存，号槐聚，曾用笔名中书君，中国现代知名作家、文学研究家。曾为《毛泽东选集》英文版翻译小组成员。晚年就职于中国社会科学院，任副院长。书评家夏志清先生认为小说《围城》是“中国近代文学中zui有趣、zui用心经营的小说，可能是zui伟大的一部”。钱钟书在文学，国故，比较文学，文化批评等领域的成就，推崇者甚至冠以“钱学”。 
Qian Zhongshu(Ch’ien Chung-shu,1910-1998) was a novelist, poet, man of letters and one of China’s most outstanding scholars. With a mastery of Chinese, English, Greek, Latin, German, French, Spanish and Italian, he was seen by many in his country as the last link in an unbroken chain of geniuses stretching back toConfucius.Born in the city of Wuxi, Qian studied at Oxford University and at the University of Paris before returning to China, where he survived persecution during the Cultural Revolution to become the country’s mostrenowned writer. AlthoughFortress Besieged is his most famous novel, he also wrote many landmark texts onclassical Chinese literature, short stories, essays and a second, unfinished novel,Heart of the Artichoke. He was married to the writer and translator Yan Jiang.

Nathan K. Maowas educated at New Asia College (Hong Kong), Yale University and the University of Wisconsin. He is the co-translator of Pa Chin’sCold Nights (Chinese University Press). 

Jeanne Kellypublished translations of both classical and modern Chinese short stories before beginning the translation ofFortress Besieged.
