Douglas Noël Adams (March 11, 1952 - May 11, 2001) was a British radio playwright and musician, best known for his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. The work began as a radio play, then developed into a trilogy of five books, which was made into a television series. It was also made into a movie after Adams' death.

In addition to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, Adams also participated in the filming of the science fiction television series Doctor Who, for which he wrote some of the scripts. His other works include the Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency series, the two books Stars Like Dust, which he co-wrote, and The Last Look, which was also based on a radio play. Adams was also an environmental activist who liked fast cars, cameras, Macintosh computers, and other advanced technologies. He was already using these new technologies when many people had not heard of email and Usenet.

Adams called himself an "extreme atheist." Before his death, he was a popular speaker, particularly on topics such as technology and the environment, and his untimely death at the age of 49 was greatly mourned in the science fiction and fantasy community.
