Leipzig has long been one of Europe’s most important centers of figurative painting. The Leipzig School and the New Leipzig School have gained international recognition for their distinctive artistic language, combining traditional craftsmanship, realism, and imaginative visual narratives. Emerging from the renowned Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig), this tradition reflects Germany’s complex history while continuously exploring new directions in contemporary painting.

This book traces the development of Leipzig painting through the works of influential artists such as Werner Tübke, Bernhard Heisig, and Wolfgang Mattheuer, as well as contemporary painters including Neo Rauch, Rosa Loy, and Matthias Weischer. Through richly illustrated essays and selected artworks, it explores how Leipzig artists combine realism, symbolism, personal memory, and dreamlike imagery to create a unique visual language.

Published in conjunction with the exhibition Hotspot Leipzig at the Drents Museum, this volume examines the evolution of Leipzig’s artistic tradition and its continuing influence on contemporary European painting.
