Scholarship on early China typically relies on a small number of core canonical texts, but many understudied works have the potential to transform our understanding of early Chinese intellectual, religious, and political history. Yegor Grebnev examines important noncanonical texts preserved in the Yi Zhou shu (Lost Book of Zhou) and the Grand Duke traditions, which represent influential yet marginalized textual traditions of the Warring States period. He proposes an innovative framework that focuses on the role of these texts in the mediation of royal legitimacy and the formative influence they had on early Daoism. Grebnev argues for the centrality of the Yi Zhou shu in Chinese intellectual history by revealing its links to both the canonical tradition and esoteric Daoism. He also shows that the Daoist transmission rituals embedded in the Grand Duke traditions bear the imprint of Warring States courtly settings, where early Daoists sought prestige and power by offering legitimacy through texts attributed to mythical sage-kings. These rituals appear to have emerged at the same time as the core Daoist philosophical texts, rather than centuries later, as traditionally thought, which calls into question the intertwined histories of the Daoist religious and philosophical traditions.
