Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was one of Russia's greatest short story writers, a playwright and a novelist. He worked as a doctor, too, and initially began writing for the financial rewards it presented. Chekhov was a writer with a strong sense of humor. His novels are compact, concise, and give the reader room to think for himself. His plays had a great influence on the 20th century drama. He adhered to the realistic tradition, paid attention to describing the daily life of the Russian people, and created small figures with typical characters, thus reflecting the real situation of the Russian society at that time. The three major characteristics of his works are the ridicule to the ugly phenomenon and the deep sympathy to the poor people, and his works ruthlessly exposed the unreasonable social system and the ugly phenomenon of the society under the tsar's rule. He is regarded as the outstanding representative of Russian realism literature in the late 19th century.
