Investigating the realms of architecture and its future possibilities is an exploration of innovation and new forms of design and urbanity. Even if some of the investigations seem out of scale or even utopian, they all stem from actual commissions and share a genuine desire to address individual needs and topics, such as how to create more basic, low tech urban living qualities and activate spaces, making them greener and providing more light and views.

Built Unbuilt contains the essence of Julien De Smedt's 16 year working career, starting with PLOT building practice co-founded with Bjarke Ingels, and later building his own architectural firm. The exquisite color illustrations in the book, taken by photographer Julien Lanoo, give readers a full view of a variety of projects, ranging from large-scale overall planning to indoor furniture installation, from the development of Chinese architecture to in-depth analysis of practical problems of design driving forces.

In particular, it focuses on the key themes of community participation and environmental inclusiveness. The cases in the book include the Maison Stéphane Hessel in Lille, the Gateway Tower in Hangzhou and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump platform in Oslo. The book also shows a number of coastal projects, including Kalvebod Waves in Copenhagen, and the iceberg house in Aarhus.

The second half of the book outlines the ideas that have not yet been realized and is described by De Smedt as "architectural cemetery". He explained: "In this period, ideology and idealism are more challenged than ever before. As a possible way of ideological and conceptual progress, these areas are the light of optimism worth exploring. Even if they give up halfway, they illuminate the way forward."
