Gwen John (1876–1939) was one of the most distinctive artists of twentieth-century British modernism. Best known for her intimate portraits of women, subtle tonal harmonies, and quiet yet powerful compositions, John developed a unique artistic language that moves between figuration and abstraction. For much of her life, her achievements were overshadowed by her relationships with prominent male figures, including her brother Augustus John and the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. Recent scholarship, however, has brought renewed attention to her significant contribution to British art and European modernism.

This volume presents the first comprehensive survey of Gwen John’s work in over forty years, offering fresh scholarly perspectives and a feminist reassessment of her artistic career. Bringing together her celebrated oil paintings with rarely seen works on paper—including watercolours, drawings, plein air studies, and still lifes—the book reveals the breadth of her ambition and the complexity of her creative practice. Essays explore her serial approach to composition, her vibrant use of colour, and her exploration of the relationship between figuration and abstraction.
