Published to mark the centenary of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris—the landmark exhibition that shaped twentieth-century design and gave Art Deco its name—this volume offers a fresh look at its most celebrated pavilion. The exposition attracted over sixteen million visitors and showcased the pinnacle of French luxury and design innovation. As the preeminent figure of French decorative arts, émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879–1933) was celebrated for the aesthetic refinement, luxurious materials, and impeccable craftsmanship of his work. Inspired by eighteenth-century folies, Ruhlmann‘s L’H?tel du Collectionneur was one of the most acclaimed pavilions at the fair. Conceived as a modern-day Petit Trianon, it was furnished with his own luxurious furnishings and a carefully curated selection of works by his contemporaries, including Edgar Brandt, Jean Dunand, and Jean Puiforcat. The centerpiece of this volume is a facsimile of the pavilion‘s original catalogue.
