Letters to Camondo is a book of imagined letters from Edmund de Waal to Mo?se de Camondo, a renowned collector and a member of the Jewish banking family that settled in Paris in the nineteenth century. The Camondos and the Ephrussi family—the subject of de Waal's bestselling The Hare with Amber Eyes—were neighbors in the world of late-nineteenth-century Paris, both Jewish families of immense wealth, both the target of anti-Semitism. The Camondo family built a magnificent house and filled it with the finest French eighteenth-century art, intending it for the son Nissim, who was killed in the First World War. Their home was bequeathed to France and is now the Musée Nissim de Camondo. De Waal was invited to make an exhibition in this museum, and he explores that experience in these letters, reflecting on art, family, exile, and remembrance and on the ways we try to leave something behind.
