谢世坚,教授,广西师范大学外国语学院院长,博士生导师,教育部高校外国语言文学类专业教学指导委员会英语专业教学指导分委员会委员,中国英语教学研究会常务理事,广西翻译协会副会长。主要研究方向为语言学、莎士比亚研究(莎士比亚语言与翻译)和翻译研究,主持国家社科基金项目2项,参与省部级项目10余项,在国内重要学术期刊发表论文50多篇,出版专著2部,译著8部,教材3部。

前言

本教材《英语国家概况》(修订版)属于“全人教育英语专业本科教材系列”中针对英语专业基础阶段英语知识学习所编写的专用教材。自初版以来将近四年,随着国际形势的变化,原教材中的部分内容已经较为陈旧,不能完全反映《普通高等学校本科专业类教学质量国家标准》和《普通高等学校本科英语类专业教学指南》中对培养学生探究式学习、创新发展能力的要求。有鉴于此,我们在第一版的基础上对教材进行了修订,以期达到与时俱进,同时培养学生进行自主探究式学习能力,发展批判性、创新思维品质。本教材的修订注重体现以下特色:

一、落实“立德树人”根本任务,坚持社会主义核心价值观引领

教材中对各英语国家的介绍覆盖了社会与文化的各个方面,包括地理、历史、人口、民族、政治、经济、教育、文学等内容,体现了全人教育的“通识教育”理念,并且融入了中西方交流内容,注重培养学生正确的人生观和价值观、高尚的审美情趣以及对待西方文化的正确态度,取其精华,去其糟粕,为我所用,着力挖掘各章节中的思政教育元素,突出新时代中国特色社会主义思想、社会主义核心价值观教育、法治教育以及优秀传统文化教育。

二、贯彻全人教育理念,体现英语工具性与人文性的有机结合

修订版精心选用最新的权威材料,在介绍传统历史、地理等客观知识的基础上新增内容涵盖了本世纪以来的最新重大事件,内容与时俱进,力求客观全面。教材内容强调以人为本,语言难易适中,有利于学生开展自主阅读与学习,提高英语运用能力。通过本课程的学习,除掌握有关国家的基本知识外,学生还可以提高对社会科学类英文书籍的阅读能力,为以后的外语学习和工作打下良好基础。

三、重视文明互鉴与交流,提升跨文化能力

修订版教材在内容的选择上更加重视融入本土元素,在练习的设计等方面尤其注重引导学生更深入地学习我国优秀文化,在了解中西方文化的基础上进行对比分析,培养批判性思维能力,扩展国际视野,提升跨文化能力。

四、加强思辨能力培养,促进创新能力发展

修订版对各章节练习内容进行了较大修改。在任务和练习设计中以培养学生提出问题、分析问题、解决问题为旨归,对每个章节前的预习题和练习中的讨论题进行了考查知识层次的区分和调整,重视引导学生对问题进行批判性思考,并进行有效的输出实践。在每个章节的练习中删除了上一版中的单项选择及判断题;新增了与章节内容相关的材料阅读与写作题,为学生提供不同的角度,要求学生通过网络检索,深度研读与本章内容相关的材料,并在此基础上撰写适当长度的学术小论文。

五、突显自主学习与深度学习

修订版延续了初版在每章内容前以要点形式列出重点内容提示,以问题形式列出“课前准备要点”,帮助学生根据要点提示开展课前预习,掌握各章内容的组织结构与学习重点。每章节后附有相关内容的讨论题,以供学生开展课后的探究性学习和深度学习。
