The painter and graphic artist Walter Gramatté (1897–1929) – expressionist of the "second generation“, friend of Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff – was primarily concerned with the image of man, and his work depicts existential states of being such as fear and pain. His landscapes, still lifes and interiors also have great depth and mystery.

His early death put an end to his oeuvre, which has remained little known to this day – but can now be rediscovered.
