欣闻中国的胰岛移植研究人员组织编写了一本专业阐述临床胰岛移植相关的基础和应用方面的书籍。我对临床胰岛移植领域非常感兴趣。大家知道，胰岛移植目前在欧洲及北美等国家已经开展了50多年的基础研究，并有30多年的临床应用研究，我也有幸参与了其中一些工作。我非常看好胰岛移植在糖尿病和自身胰腺疾病治疗中的应用前景，虽然目前还存在一些不足。希望通过大家的共同努力，我们会看到该领域持续的进展和越来越多的患者从中受益。
刘成洋医生带领的团队通过查阅大量的文献和胰岛移植相关书籍，并结合自己多年临床胰岛分离和移植工作的宝贵经验，编著了《临床胰岛移植基础和应用》。我很高兴多年来与他一起共事。该书详述了胰岛移植临床应用的历史和现状，总结了国际上临床胰岛移植在研究和应用方面的经验和教训，对同种异体胰岛移植的每一个细节都提供了详细阐述，比如患者的选择、供体器官筛选与获取方法、胰岛分离、移植途径、免疫抑制药物、术后监督与管理以及自体胰岛移植的临床应用。该书包含了胰岛移植领域的一些最新进展，尤其是美国临床胰岛移植联盟（CIT）的一些数据和方案。
热烈祝贺该书的出版。希望中国的读者，尤其是从事临床胰岛移植领域的科研人员或医生，可以从中汲取一些营养。祝愿中国的临床胰岛移植工作发展得越来越好！

I am happy to learn that the researchers in islet transplantation in China have edited a book on clinical islet transplantation, the basics and its clinical application. This is an area of significant interest to me. As many of you know, there have been over 50 years of basic science research, and over 30 years of clinical research in pancreatic islet isolation in Europe and Northern America. I had the pleasure of participating in this work. I have great aspiration for the utility of islet transplantation in the treatment of diabetes and auto-immune pancreatic disorders. Even though there are still areas of imperfection. I hope that with conjoint efforts, we will see continued advancement in this field and that more and more patients will be able to benefit from this treatment.
The editor in chief, Dr. Chengyang Liu, organized the book “Clinical Islet Transplantation, the Basic and its Application” based on his years of experience in the field as well as extensive research using various databases, and medical literature. I am happy to have worked with him through the years. This book comprehensively covered the history and present of clinical islet transplantation, summarized the experience and lessons learned through trials and tribulations of medical research worldwide. It offered a detailed review on each step of allogeneic islet transplantation such as patient selection, organ selection and procurement, cell isolation, routes of cell transplantation, immunosuppressive regimens, and post-operative surveillance and management as well as utility of islet auto-transplantation. It included the most up-to-date advances in islet transplantation, especially the USA CIT consortium data and protocols.
I send my sincerest congratulations on the publication of the book. I hope that it can serve as a valuable resource of reference for researchers, especially clinicians and researchers in China on the field of islet transplantation. I wish the best to clinical transplantation development in China.

Pancreatic islet transplantation is a minimally invasive and effective surgical approach in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. There have been great advances in this field in the last 20 years. The University of Pennsylvania has been in the forefront of islet transplant research. I have the pleasure of working with Dr. Chengyang Liu in islet isolation and transplantation for more than 20 years. He participated in nearly all clinical islet transplantation cases at the University of Pennsylvania, and has been an integral part of the team. He has had extensive experience and gained deep insight into clinical islet transplantation.
I am thrilled to see that Dr. Chengyang Liu led the experts in islet isolation and transplantation in China in publication of the book “Clinical Islet Transplantation: the Basics and its Application”. This book systematically summarized efforts and experiences of researchers and clinicians worldwide in the evolution from basic science research to clinical application of islet isolation and transplantation in the last 5 decades. It detailed the process of islet transplantation, from patient selection, organ procurement, cell isolation, to posttreatment immunomodulation. It also included the recent development of CIT protocol in the United States. In addition, it provided an indepth introduction of autotransplantation. This book should be a great reference for researchers and physicians in China who are interested in clinical islet transplantation.
It is one of my missions to advocate clinical islet isolation and transplantation as an effective treatment for diabetes. I hope to see this treatment approach reach higher levels of advancement and application, and more patients benefit from this modern technology worldwide. I appreciate the contributions that Dr. Chengyang Liu has made in the development as well as promotion of this lifealtering treatment. It is my pleasure to write a preface for this book. I believe this book will further the understanding and development of islet transplantation in China. There should be a bright future and expansive market for this marvelous treatment approach. It is with joy that I am witnessing standardization and globalization of islet transplantation.
