Zdeněk Švestka (30 September 1925 – 2 March 2013) was a Czech astronomer. For several decades he was the world's leading expert on solar flares. He studied mathematics and physics at Charles University, Prague, until graduating in 1948. Together with Cornelis de Jager, he was the co-founder and editor of the journal Solar Physics. For 38 years, from the establishment of the journal in 1967 until his retirement in 2005, he handled all papers on solar flares, while De Jager took care of everything else. The minor planet 17805 Švestka was named after him.[1]

Bernard V. Jackson
My research area is Solar and Heliospheric Physics. In particular, I am interested in the solar corona, the solar wind, and transient phenomena within the heliosphere.
Our group here at UCSD has developed a facility for processing archival data from the HELIOS spacecraft Zodiacal Light Photometers. Using this and interplanetary scintillation (IPS) data allows us to reconstruct solar wind structures in 3 dimensions, with an eye toward space weather forecasting.
Currently, I am co-investigator on the Solar Mass Ejection Imager, (SMEI), now under construction. SMEI will fly on an Earth-orbiting spacecraft being developed for the U.S.Air Force Coriolis Mission by UC San Diego and the University of Birmingham,in Birmingham,England. I am also involved with the SOHO LASCO coronograph instrumentation.

Marcos E. Machado graduated in Astronomy at Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1971. He continued his education at the University of Colorado, Boulder, until 1974, and held short-term positions as assistant researcher at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics and Sacramento Peak Observatory. From 1977 until 1979, he was research fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Several of his most and still cited articles on spectral analysis and modelling of the solar atmosphere belong to this period.
