Crime and Punishment describes the mental suffering and moral dilemma of the protagonist Rodion Manich Raskolnikov. He is a poor university student from St. Petersburg who kills an unethical pawnbroker and an old woman who stored money and valuables in her apartment for a living. He claims that with the money, he can get himself out of poverty and do more good things, and convinces himself that if the crime is to remove obstacles to becoming an "extraordinary" human being, then it is just. However, he is later tortured by confusion, paranoia and disgust. All theoretical defenses lose their effect when he struggles with guilt and fear and faces the internal and external consequences of his actions.
