内容提要:
This book tells of a young adult adventure which evokes the popular childhood folklore, ‘If I dig deep enough, will I pop out in China?’ Roosevelt ‘Rosy’ Sullivan is a twelve-year old day-dreamer from southeastern Kentucky. Desperate to fulfill an imagined family legacy, the boy tunnels his way through the Earth, via an abandoned coal mine. In a strange land, his courage and independence of others is put to the test before unfamiliar cultures, bullfighting, bug gobbling, and finally making a decision between the easy choice and the right choice, risking his life for people he’d only just met. Lee May, an eleven-year old Chinese girl from a remote mountain village, is lost to depression from the death of her mother. A reoccurring dream offers hope, an escape from a bleak future. Through unusual circumstance, Lee May passes through the Earth and falls into Rosy’s world, facing her own challenges, both real and invented, awakening feelings that had fallen dormant, the importance of friendship and letting go. Over twenty-four hours, their journeys are intertwined, two threads are interwoven, each experiencing the others life through the families and homes they left behind.
作者简介:
Graduated with a degree in psychology, Kevin Smith worked as a social worker in the US, assisting families in crisis. Afterwards, he moved to South Korea, before settling in China. Altogether, Kevin Smith has spent more than ten years in China, travelling extensively all over the country. Over the period, he worked as an English teacher, learned how to read and write Chinese, and is now a sales representative for an international trading company. In addition, he is also a food critic, publishing food reviews regularly. Kevin is very passionate about writing and telling stories, or, in his words, “people-watching”. Kevin Smith’s latest bilingual book Hello Rice, I’m Hamburger (《你好,米饭,我是汉堡!》) was published by Zhejiang University Press in December 2016. Written from an American’s — and outsider’s — perspective, the book is an attempt to introduce to Chinese readers his amusing (and sometimes confusing) experiences in China and what China is like in the eyes of an ordinary foreigner who has lived in the country for over a decade.
