A revolutionary art movement ignited in India in the late 1940s, as the country shook off British rule and celebrated its independence. The nation’s artists developed a new visual language, mixing modernism with homegrown subject matter to create a vibrant, original art. This is the first book to examine the three generations of artists who made this movement a reality. After independence, Indian artists faced a particular challenge: how to express the distinctive character of the new nation while entering into a global conversation predicated on modernism‘s experimentalism and shared humanity. With no dominant aesthetic, painters were free to turn to and meld a variety of styles—drawing inspiration from movements as diverse as Abstract Expressionism and Tantric spirituality; Rajasthani painting and the complex political, religious, class, and daily life of India. Featuring iconic works from the Herwitz Collection, the book is organized around three generations of artists—Pathbreakers, Midnight’s Children, and New Mediators—each with an introductory essay. Contributors include Homi K. Bhabha, whose writing on post-colonialism has transformed the field of the humanities.
