The Ming court (1368–1644) was not a monolithic, unchanging entity but an arena of constant negotiation and competition. A diverse cast of actors—including the emperor, scholar-officials, eunuchs, palace women, artists, monks, and foreign envoys—pursued their individual and corporate ends, shaping court protocol and cultural expression. This collection of essays draws on a wide range of Chinese documentary sources, material artifacts, and contemporary foreign accounts to offer a multifaceted portrait of the court. Rather than embodying an immutable set of traditions, Ming court culture underwent frequent reinterpretation and rearticulation, driven by immediate personal imperatives and mediated through social, political, and cultural interaction.
