《朗格谈紫色童话》共收录童话三十三篇，配有数十幅精美插图。主要收集苏格兰、爱尔兰、法国、葡萄牙、斯瓦希里、阿富汗和澳大利亚等国家和地区的民间故事和传说。这些故事有的讲述一个从小聪明的孩子，为何不听母亲的话，不好好学习一门手艺，借以谋生，却专门去干盗窃和诈骗的勾当。他尽管得意于一时，最后还是落得死于非命（《狡猾的男孩》）；有的故事讲述一个小男孩老是喜欢吹牛，到头来自己吃尽了苦头（《勇敢的沃尔特如何打狼》）；有的故事讲述兄弟姐妹之间，老实忠厚的开始总是被人欺负，受尽折磨，后来在主持正义的人们帮助下，终于得到了应有的幸福（《穷富兄弟》)。这本童话集还从以神话、民间故事和英雄传奇的基础的，中世纪威尔士故事集《马诺吉昂》中选了几篇精彩故事。亚瑟及其骑士助人为乐的豪爽性格和英雄们追求理想的不屈不挠的精神感人至深。

Andrew Lang was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him.
