Niepoort has been handcrafting outstanding ports since 1842. Dirk van der Niepoort is currently the fifth generation of the family. Their extraordinary reputation is founded on a commitment to ancient vineyards, still treading most of their grapes in old granite ‘lagares’ and bottling without filtration. As such, they remain regarded by many as the guardians of authentic port production.

Niepoort used to be well-known for their Tawny and Colheita ports, but Dirk has worked tirelessly to raise the profile of their Vintage Ports too. One of the key moves, with this in mind, was for Niepoort to purchase their own vineyards with Quintas de Nápoles, do Carril and do Passadouro coming under the Niepoort wing at the end of the 1990's. The Niepoort wines project commenced with the first Redoma Tinto in 1991.

The Niepoort brand is ranked amongst the great names in the world of wine. Considering that it is a small company, this fact assumes particular relevance. When its Vintage 1997 was rated "best Port Wine" in the Top 100 of the magazine Wine Spectator in 2000, Niepoort finally gained international recognition.
