1990年参与到总投资30亿美元的「人类基因组计划」的研究中，但中途退出，1998年创立「赛莱拉公司」，一人单挑6国科学家，仅用两年时间就完成了人类基因组序列的测定。

「文特尔研究所」创始人，2003年合成噬菌体phi X174的DNA，2008年合成生殖支原体的基因组，2010年5月合成了包含110万个硷基对的丝状支原体基因组，然后将其移植到山羊支原体细胞中，创造了第一个「人造细胞」。
