What is a house? The answer is at once obvious and nebulous. It’s a building, generally, a four-sided dwelling, with a floor and a roof to protect humans from the elements. It can look, however, like a yurt, a McMansion, a villa, a manor — or a roughly 7,750-square-foot subterranean abode on the Greek island of Antiparos, if you’ve watched the BBC’s “World’s Most Extraordinary Homes”.

It’s in the differences, however, that houses act like prisms. Through them, we see philosophical movements, the progression of technology and the values held by the architects and homeowners. Which is why the updated version of The Iconic House by Dominic Bradbury, is worth picking up, whether you know everything or nothing about architecture.

Inside are more than 100 case studies — spanning globe and genre throughout the 20th century and a little beyond — from Victor Horta’s Hotel Solvay in Brussels to Tom Kundig’s Studhorse in Winthrop, Wash. Many have been instrumental in establishing a new architectural paradigm or providing a pivotal reference point for a defined architectural or stylistic movement. All have provided benchmarks in their architects’ careers, often becoming the creator’s best-known work.

Richard Powers has re-photographed the houses. He zooms in on the living room of Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Conn., where it seems you might reach out and touch the leather on the black Barcelona chairs, and he transports us to the quiet glade outside the Eames House in the hills of Los Angeles, the tree trunks warm with happy sunbeams. Each study is accompanied by floor plans and a friendly full-page essay by Bradbury. It’s clear that author and photographer love these houses in the way that the architects and owners did.
