David Guterson is the author of the novels East of the Mountains, Our Lady of the Forest, The Other, Ed King, and Snow Falling on Cedars, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award; a story collection, The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind; and Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense. He has three forthcoming books: a memoir, Descent, from Vintage in 2013; a new story collection, Problems with People, from Knopf in 2014; and a book of poems, Songs for a Summons, from Lost Horse Press in 2014. He lives in Washington State.

The accused man, Kabuo Miyamoto, sat proudly upright, as if trying to distance himself from his own trial. He showed noemotion - not even the smallest movement of his eyes. He was dressed in a white shirt worn buttoned to the throat and grey, neatly pressed trousers. His body, especially the neck and shoulders, spoke of great physical strength. Kabuo’s features were smooth and sharp-edged; his hair had been cut close to his skull so that the muscles seemed to stand out. As the charge against him was read, his dark eyes looked straight ahead, showing no emotion.

The eighty-five citizens in the public part of the court were strangely quiet and thoughtful in that small over-heated room. Most of them had known Carl Heine, now buried up on Indian Knob Hill, a salmon fisherman with a wife and three children. Most had dressed today with the same care they took on Sundays before going to church, and since Judge Llewellyn Fielding’s courtroom, however simple, mirrored in their hearts the holiness of their prayer houses, they behaved with church-going quietness. The jurors, too, sat quietly as they tried to make sense ofmatters. The men were all dressed in coats and ties. The women all wore Sunday dresses. Snow fell that morning outside the tall, narrow courthouse windows. A wind from the sea threw snow against the glass. Beyond the courthouse the town of Amity Harbor spread along the island shore towards a few ageing, wind-whipped houses. The snow made it difficult to see the clean lines of the green, cedar-covered hills. The accused man watched the falling snow. He had been shut away from the world in the county prison for seventy-seven days- the last part of September, all of October and all of November, the first week ofDecember. There was no window anywhere in his cell through which the autumn light could come to him. He had missed autumn, he realized now- it had passed already, disappeared. The snowfall, which he saw out of the corners of his eyes, struck him as being endlessly beautiful. Five thousand people lived on San Piedro, an island named by the sailors on a lost Spanish ship in the year 1603. Amity Harbor, the island’s only town, was home to fishing ships and one-man gill-netting boats. It was a rainy, wind-beaten sea village which had seen better times. On winter nights its steep streets lay broad and empty under the rain.
