Shifting Stories explores the tales of the Tang dynasty (618-907), showing how the texts we have today emerged from a fluid culture of gossip and lore in elite society. Sarah M. Allen focuses on two major story types: accounts of wonders based on tales of the strange and accounts of anecdotes on topics concerning notable public figures. She shows how writers of the period borrowed and adapted stories and plotlines already in circulation and transformed them into distinctive and sophisticated narrative works. For most contemporary readers, these tales were open texts, revised by multiple hands as they circulated, not subject to concerns of textual integrity or authorial identity. Only in the mid- to late ninth century did readers and editors begin to value specific wording and attribution, a shift that eventually led to the formation of the Tang tale canon as we know it today. Sarah M. Allen is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at Williams College.
