Preface
I really like the title of this book. It is difficult to show what a school looks like, especially if it is only shown in pictures. Mr. Li Qiang has spent ten years walking among the green trees and red buildings on campus. With his enthusiasm, diligence, keenness and perseverance, he brought us this wonderful book named “What a School Looks Like”. Through this book, the familiar scenes on campus bring us a refreshing feeling.
Schools are supposed to reflect what kids look like, as schools exist because of kids, and teachers meet because of them too. To measure the value of a school’s existence, of course, it should be based on the results of her education. However, the results of education are not shown at the moment when students graduate, nor simply shown through test scores. Most of the results appear after ten, twenty, thirty years or even longer. The world often lacks such patience. Even people who have been on campus for a long time are often ignorant: they are either eager for quick success, pursuing immediate test scores, or lack of belief, unable to find their professional value. Mr. Li Qiang captured the professional value of teachers through What the School Looks Like. The moments presented in pictures let us discover the details that we have turned a blind eye to, the laughter that has fallen on deaf ears, and the novelties that are often seen but neglected. This process actually restores the original meaning of education: the value of education occurs in the process. With a good process, we can confidently say that we only care about the cultivation, not the harvest. A good campus ecology is often the nourishment for children’s future growth. In this sense, this book has done us educators a big favor, allowing us to predict what our children will look like in the future.
For a long time, the camera lenses on our campus have forgotten students—most ofthem focus on the scene of administrators’ inspections or various group activities. What we especially regret is that even if you visit the so-called prestigious schools, people always lead you to fancy places where you can’t see students: grand venues, delicate bridges and sculptures, or windows with photos of famous alumni. To be honest, if we can’t see students on campus, hardly can we evaluate or appreciate the educational style and value of the school. I admire how Mr. Li looks like on campus. He is looking at students, talking about students, and thinking of students at any time. A teacher whose heart is filled with students will certainly be favored by students, and such a teacher represents the most respectable image of educators at BNDS.
Mr. Li Qiang majored in politics in college. When I was the Principal of Gaomi No. 1 High School of Shandong Province in 1995, I invited Mr. Li Qiang, who loved photography and led a student photography club, to be the director of a newly established Special Education Office. I was quite worried at that time, afraid that such a decision would affect the professional development of a teacher. Later facts proved how “brilliant” this decision was. Of course, such “brilliance” was completely proved by Mr. Li Qiang himself, who later went to Beijing Film Academy for further study in photography. However, this also inspires educators: people’s talents and potential really need to be discovered and tapped.
I would like to recommend this book to all teachers and educators. Please don’t mistake it for a photographic collection. It uses pictures to help us reach into education. It provides us with a more vivid picture of education in a unique way, gives us more space for imagination and possibility of re-creation, and takes us into an artistic world of education.
I miss the kids who are shown in the picture and those who are not. I’d like to send my best wishes one more time to all my dear students. As what I said at the graduation ceremony every year: I wish you happiness all your life!
