故事发生在26世纪文明崩溃后的后启示录时代，作品围绕着地上城市“废铁城”和天空之城“萨雷姆”的对立展开。原著的世界观非常黑暗，一开始就是一个男人在堆积如山的钢铁垃圾上漫无目的地寻找着什么，结果他找到了一具残破的少女机械残躯，也就是女主角Gally。
