This new publication examines the complex and long-lived medium of folding and standing screens in East Asian art. The volume is a result of a symposium organized by the Center for the Art of East Asia and held at the University of Chicago in May of 2011 on the subject of “The Screen in East Asia and Beyond”. The essays present new perspectives on the production of screens from ancient times to recent centuries as objects made for furnishing homes, gardens, tombs, and palaces that were frequently decorated with painting, calligraphy and other forms of art. The writers articulate the screen’s many functions and its artistic expressions as furnishings within architectural spaces, as objects associated with social prestige and political authority, and as pictorial representations of social and cultural identity, in various cultural and historical contexts.
