Hsün Tzu set forth the most complete well-ordered philosophical system of his day. Although basically Confucian, he differed with Mencius, his famous predecessor in the Confucian school, by asserting that the original nature of man is evil. To counteract this evil, he advocated self-improvement, the pursuit of learning, the avoidance of obsession, and constant attention to ritual in all areas of life. With a translation by the noted scholar Burton Watson, includes an introduction to the philosopher in relation to Chinese history and thought. Readers familiar with Hsün Tzu's work will find that Watson's lucid translation breaths new life into this classic. 荀子（约公元前316年—约公元前237年至公元前235年），名况，被尊称为荀卿，又称孙卿，中国战国时代儒家学者和思想家，赵国人，曾担任齐国稷下学宫祭酒、楚国兰陵令，到赵国、秦国游说诸侯，宣扬儒学和传授六经，批评子思、孟子等其他儒者及墨家等其他学派，有韩非、李斯等弟子，著作后世编为《荀子》一书。作为先秦儒家代表人物，与孔子、孟子合称孔孟荀。

伯顿·沃森是世界知名的中日翻译家之一。他翻译的作品包括《妙法莲华经》、《维摩诘经》、《旅宽》、《西行：山居诗集》和《哥伦比亚中国诗集：从远古到十三世纪》，均由哥伦比亚出版社出版。

Xunzi (c. 316 BC - c. 237 BC - 235 BC), also known as Kuang, was honored as Xunqing, also known as Sunqing, a Confucian scholar and thinker in the Warring States Period of China. He was a native of Zhao State. He served as Jijiu of Jixia Academy of Qi State and Lanling of Chu State. He went to Zhao State and Qin State to lobby the princes, promote Confucianism and teach the Six Classics, criticize other Confucianists such as Zisi and Mencius, and other schools such as Mohism and Taoism. He had disciples such as Han Fei and Li Si. His works were later compiled into the book "Xunzi". As a representative figure of pre-Qin Confucianism, he is collectively known as Kongmengxun with Confucius and Mencius.

Burton Watson is one of the world's best-known translators from the Chinese and Japanese. His translations include The Lotus Sutra, The Vimalakirti Sutra, Ryokan: Saigyo: Poems of a Mountain Home, and The Columbia Book of Chinese Poetry: From Early Times to the Thirteenth Century, all published by Columbia.
