Women and Fiction《

From Kate Chopin’s turn-of-the-century Lousiana, to Gertrude Stein’s war-time Paris, to Alice Walker’s modern-day America, here are twenty-six short stories by the finest women writers of the twentieth century. These well-known and well-loved authors people their stories with vibrant female characters, from all over the world and all walks of life. Separately, each of these stories bears the mark of a skilled writer. Together, they celebrate woman in her many roles—as daughter, mother, worker, wife, lover, sister, and friend. In Tillie Olsen’s classic, “I Stand Here Ironing,” a single mother considers her success in raising a daughter. In Eudora Welty’s “The Worn Path,” an African-American grandmother meets with grace the impudence of a young, white man. In Alice Munro’s “The Office,” a wife who has too many distractions to write at home rents a room in town, only to be constantly interrupted by her landlord. Superbly written, and at once poignant and ironic, these insightful stories capture the essence of being a woman—in all its similarity, and all its diversity.

Bibliography

Novelists and poets, however, may divide their time between the sitting rooms in the house of fiction and Pamassus. The biography and art of the next great woman novelist show the imaginative writer as a member of a world larger than the one to which Mrs. Woolf’s theory assigns her. The year after Jane Austen was buried beneath the civilized arches of Winchester Cathedral, Emily Brontë was born on the edge of the Yorkshire moors. She was a great poet as well as, for many readers, the writer of the greatest English novel. She got her training by walking the windswept mountainy moors, alone, or in the company of a brother or sister or two rather than by surrounding herself with people in the common sitting room of the Haworth parsonage. To avoid the need to go out from the blessed isolation of her father’s house to earn her living as a governess in strange sitting rooms, she sat uninterrupted in a corner of her father’s garden writing Wushering Heights. She was most admired, perhaps, for “that romantic intensity” which Mrs. Woolf attributes to the imagination of the poet. For resisting classification by literary historians and critics alike, Emily Brontë has gone down in literary history as something of a “freak”.
