The entire subject of polymers can be simplified by classifying polymers into categories basedupon elevated temperature characteristics and chemical families． All polymers are either thermoplastic or thermosetting in nature． Thermoplastic is a polymer that turns to a liquid when heated and freezes to a very glassy state when cooled sufficiently． Most thermoplastics are high—molecular—weight polymers whose chains associate through weak Van der Waals forces （polyethylene）； stronger dipole—dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding （nylon）； or even stacking of aromatic rings （polystyrene）． Thermoplastic polymers can be remelted and remoulded． That means thermoplastic material will melt at elevated temperature， and the solidified polymer can be reheated as many times as desired and will do the same thing． So most plastic fabricators do recycle scrapped parts as well as the unused portion of the plastic molding． On the other hand， thermosetting polymers， once a part has been made ither by cross—linking or polymerization under heat and pressure or by a catalyzing operation， will not melt on reheating． Essentially， whether a polymer is thermosetting or thermoplastic is determined by the nature of the monomer and the bonds between chains．
