Un effet du japonais, which translates as "a Japanese effect," is a phrase used by Alexander Calder to describe how an element of Japanese art—its shape, silhouette, or texture—would unexpectedly surface in his work. In the 1930s, Japanese artists and poets in Paris began to revere Calder and his work, forming a connection that would resonate throughout his life. This book celebrates the exhibition at Azabudai Hills Gallery, the first solo exhibition of Calder's work in Tokyo in nearly thirty-five years. Featuring ninety-eight works from the Calder Foundation collection—including mobiles, stabiles, standing mobiles, paintings, and works on paper—the volume explores the enduring resonance between Calder's art and Japanese culture and aesthetics. Through new scholarship, archival materials, and poetry by Jane Hirshfield, the book reveals the deep and persistent connections between the artist and Japan.
