拿破仑于1804年11月6日加冕称帝，把共和国变成帝国。在位期间称“法国人的皇帝”，也是历史上自查理三世后第二位享有此名号的法国皇帝。

对内他多次镇压反动势力的叛乱，颁布了《拿破仑法典》，完善了世界法律体系，奠定了西方资本主义国家的社会秩序。

对外他率军五破英、普、奥、俄等国组成的反法联盟，打赢五十余场大型战役，沉重地打击了欧洲各国的封建制度，捍卫了法国大革命的成果。他在法国执政期间多次对外扩张，发动了拿破仑战争，成为了意大利国王、莱茵邦联的保护者、瑞士联邦的仲裁者、法兰西帝国殖民领主（包含各法国殖民地、荷兰殖民地、西班牙殖民地等）。在辉煌时期，欧洲除英国外，其余各国均向拿破仑臣服或结盟。形成了庞大的拿破仑帝国体系，创造了一系列军政奇迹与短暂的辉煌成就。

拿破仑于1814年退位，随后被流放至厄尔巴岛。1815年建立百日王朝后再度战败于滑铁卢后被流放。1821年5月5日，拿破仑病逝于圣赫勒拿岛。

1840年，他的灵柩被迎回法国巴黎，隆重安葬在法国塞纳河畔的巴黎荣军院（巴黎伤残老年军人院）。
