In 1975, Josh Jensen founded Calera in the Gavilan Mountains of California’s Central Coast. Inspired by his mentors in Burgundy, who have grown Pinot Noir in lime-rich soils for centuries, Jensen’s goal was to unearth limestone-rich soils in California to create unique and stylish terroir-driven Pinot Noirs. 48 years later, Calera wines are revered globally for their elegance, complexity, and stylish expression of the Central Coast terroir.
“Calera” is Spanish for Limekiln. This kiln was built circa 1860 for use in processing limestone rock for use in cement and mortar. The rock pieces were “cooked” at high heat for 24 hours.
Josh Jensen purchased the limestone-laden Mt. Harlan property in 1974. He knew that the “calcaire” soils were perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes to make classic, world-class wines.
Calera is located 40km East of Monterey, in the Gavilan Mountains. Cold marine air flows in off the Pacific Ocean and sweeps over Calera’s vineyards up at 670m altitude, making them one of the very coolest growing regions in California, on average 2-3˚C cooler than Carneros (Napa Valley-Sonoma Valley).
In the mid-seventies Josh was considered quite the renegade, planting a vineyard in such a remote, barren area. At the time, terroir was not a term commonly used and Pinot Noir was not recognized as a quality California wine.
A master of Pinot Noir, known for his terroir-driven approach to winemaking, current winemaker Mike Waller has worked alongside legendary vintner Josh Jensen for more than a decade, helping to guide winemaking at Calera. Mike’s winemaking style honors the character and complexity of Calera’s six renowned sites on Mt. Harlan, which are the source for some of the New World’s most revered wines. In the winery, Mike captures the nuance of these grand cru-caliber vineyards to create sophisticated wines renowned for their layered elegance and aging potential.
