Up the River of Time is the first book in any language to examine Qingming Shanghe (Up the River during Qingming) as an evolving painting tradition rather than focusing solely on the celebrated Northern Song original attributed to Zhang Zeduan. Revered as China's "Mona Lisa," the composition inspired more than one hundred surviving handscrolls produced from the Song dynasty through the Ming and High Qing periods, forming one of the richest pictorial traditions in Chinese art.

Through close analysis of successive versions of Qingming Shanghe, Cheng-hua Wang demonstrates how the image shaped artistic conventions, generated new cultural associations, fostered the development of urban landscape painting, and transformed the meanings of reproduction, copying, and forgery in Chinese art. By tracing the painting's evolution across several centuries, the book offers a new understanding of artistic transmission, visual culture, and historical memory.
