WilliamSydneyPorter(1862-1910)published all of his work—a novel and some300shortstories—underthe pseudonym 0. Henry. His talent forvividcaricature,local tone,narrative agility, and compassiontemperedby irony madehim a vastlypopular writer in the lastdecade of hislife. He wasborn inGreensboro, North Carolina, toordinarymiddle-class parentsandworked in an uncle’s drugstore asa youth,becoming acertifiedpharmacist. Like many Southernersafter theCivil War, hesought hisfortune in the West, holdingvarious jobs(newspaper work,clerkingin a land office, a teller atan Austinbank). Chargedwithembezzlement in 1894, he fled toHonduras,returning in 1897 tobewith his ill and dying wife. Hisconvictionwas caused more byhiseluding trial than by theconflictingevidence of theft. In theOhioState Penitentiary(1898-1901), hebegan to write the storiesthatmade him famous. Hemoved to NewYork, remarried, and kepthisidentity a secret fromall but a fewfriends. He is buriedinAsheville, North Carolina. Heisuniversally honored for hismasteryof the short story and forhishumane spirit.
