This exhilarating new book offers a fresh look at this masterwork, revealing its full scope as never before. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar J. Kaufmann and his wife and son, Fallingwater is celebrated for its architectural boldness and drama. The Kaufmanns pursued a lifestyle integrated with nature, and every room of the house reflects that ideal, melding stone and wood, hand and craft, and organic aesthetic. The living room floor is paved with great slabs of stone that flow, river-like, towards the horizon. Wright's built-in sofas and large panes of glass direct the eye to the terrace, forest, and cascading falls, from which a "hatch" opens to the stream below. The pool is as beautiful as it is swimmable, and the waters of Bear Run are integrated into daily life with ease and grace. This atmosphere suffuses the entire structure, which provides the organic background to the rich art collection of the Kaufmanns—paintings, textiles, sculpture, and decorative arts objects are nestled in the niches, shelves, and layered spaces of the rooms.
