Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) is one of the most controversial figures of modernism. In this study, published to mark the centenary of his death, David Franklin reappraises the artist's work in its historical and cultural context. The book focuses on Modigliani's mature work as both sculptor and painter, with a selection of works from his principal areas of production, concentrating on his portraits and female nudes. Franklin argues that Modigliani was the last great Italian Old Master, poised between the Renaissance and modernism. An artist who set himself up as a voluntary outsider to his contemporaries, his unique sculptural and painterly production explored a beauty that was touched by melancholy and suffering. He was fully aware of and fundamentally rejected the Cubism of his contemporaries, pursuing his own direction in an age of shifting styles. Through analysis of twenty-five works, Franklin identifies four key characteristics of Modigliani's work: his respect for the past, a clear awareness of his own ill health, the lasting influence of his sculptural experience on his painting, and the intensely personal technique he developed for capturing fleeting moments.
