Edward O. Thorp is a mathematics professor, author, hedge fund manager, and blackjack player. A pioneer in modern applications of probability theory, Thorp’s bestselling book, Beat the Dealer, mathematically proved that the house advantage in blackjack could be overcome by card counting. He is also the author of a guide to investment, Beat the Market; a memoir, A Man for All Measures; and numerous popular and scholarly articles. He lives in Newport Beach, California.

The first step in learning the game of blackjack is to master the rules—with emphasis on the word “master.” Even knowing the exact meaning of the rules is not enough. The reader must be able to understand the effect of each rule and of each possible variation. Both experienced players and beginners should study this chapter.
Each casino has a set of blackjack rules which agree with those of other casinos on the main points but which usually differ in details. Later in this book we shall analyze the effects of these variations; but first, for simplicity, we consider a typical set of rules. A set that is common, yet by no means universal, is listed below.

Number of Players
A blackjack game has a dealer and from one to seven players. We will see later that, generally speaking, the fewer the number of players at a table, the better it is for the player.
Our winning strategies involve varying the size of the player’s bet. The player places larger bets in favorable situations and smaller ones in unfavorable situations.
The size of the minimum bet is of greatest interest to the player with a small amount of capital. The size of the maximum bet is of interest to the player with a large amount of capital because it limits the rate at which he can win. (In Puerto Rico, a $1 minimum and a $50 maximum are common. In London a minimum of from5s. to £1—approximately 70# to $2.80—and a maximum of £ 50—about $140—are common.)
