The theory of finite fields is a branch of algebra that has come to the fore because of its diverse applications in such areas as combinatorics, coding theory and the mathematical study of switching ciruits. This book is devoted entirely to the theory of finite fields, and it provides comprehensive coverage of the literature. Bibliographical notes at the end of each chapter give an historical survey of the development of the subject.

鲁道夫-利德尔，又称鲁迪-利德尔，（*1948年8月26日，林茨）是一位从事代数工作的奥地利数学家。

Lidl从1966年起在维也纳大学学习数学，并于1970年在Wilfried Nöbauer的指导下获得博士学位（"Über Permutationspolynome in mehreren Unbestimmten"）。 随后他在维也纳技术大学担任助理，从1973年起担任讲师，1975年成为副教授。1976年，他成为位于塔斯马尼亚岛霍巴特和朗塞斯顿的塔斯马尼亚大学的教授。1993年，他成为该大学的副校长 。

他与Harald Niederreiter一起写了几本关于有限体的标准著作。

Rudolf Lidl, genannt Rudi Lidl, (* 26. August 1948 in Linz) ist ein österreichischer Mathematiker, der sich mit Algebra befasst.

Lidl studierte ab 1966 Mathematik an der Universität Wien und wurde dort 1970 bei Wilfried Nöbauer promoviert („Über Permutationspolynome in mehreren Unbestimmten“). Danach war er Assistent, ab 1973 Dozent und 1975 außerordentlicher Professor an der TU Wien. 1976 wurde er Professor an der University of Tasmania in Hobart und Launceston auf der Insel Tasmanien. 1993 wurde er Deputy Vice Chancellor der Universität.

Mit Harald Niederreiter verfasste er einige Standardwerke über Endliche Körper.
