by Zhang Baijia
Former Deputy Director of the Party History Research Office of the CPC Central Committee
In celebration of the centennial of the Communist Party of China, the International Department, Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has planned and compiled this book project, Working Hard to Bring Happiness to the Chinese People : 100 Stories of the Communist Party of China’s Pursuit of Happiness for the People in the hope that it will open a window for Chinese and foreign readers to understand better the Communist Party of China.
The Communist Party of China was founded in 1921 with only 50 members from the beginning. At that time, China was in political turmoil, the people were living in stark poverty, and its international status was low. Before and after that, nearly 100 political parties had emerged in China, but most of them were short-lived and inactive. History has shown that only the CPC has been able to unite and lead the people in common struggle, grow and develop through trials and tribulations, establish New China, achieve national independence and basic unification, and then pioneer a socialist modernization path in line with China’s national conditions, which has resulted in a historic transformation of China. The reason for this is that the Communist Party of China comes from the people and always adheres to its original aspiration and founding mission of working for the happiness of the people.
The book is divided into four chapters: the periods of the New Democratic Revolution, the Socialist Revolution and Construction, the New Period of Reform and Opening up and Socialist Modernization, and Socialism with Chinese characteristics for a New Era, in accordance with the century-long struggle of the Communist Party of China. Chapter 1 includes 20 stories of the founding mission, the People’s army, the construction of the base areas, and the safeguarding of the People’s rights. Chapter 2 contains 20 stories of establishing the basic system of socialism, governing for the people, developing the economy, and transforming the mountains and rivers. Chapter 3 consists of 20 stories of domestic reform, opening up to the outside world, and promoting comprehensive economic and social development. Chapter 4 presents 40 stories of economic, political, cultural, social and ecological development. These stories provide a vivid introduction to the revolutionary and governing philosophy of the Communist Party of China, the basic political system of China, the reality of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the improvement of People’s lives, and the changes in Chinese society. The book offers historically accurate details. All chapters are vividly written, and richly illustrated.
Serving the people is the fundamental purpose of the Communist Party of China. On November 15, 2012, at the first press conference held by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Eighteenth CPC Central Committee with Chinese and foreign journalists, Xi Jinping, who had just been elected General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said affectionately, “The People’s aspiration for a better life is our mission.” This is the latest interpretation of the Chinese Communists’ purpose in the new era, namely, “Serving the people wholeheartedly.”
In order to help readers better understand the current status of the CPC, the whole book focuses on demonstrating that since the Eighteenth CPC National Congress, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has responded to the People’s aspirations for a better life by implementing comprehensive social policies: quality childcare for the young, equal access to education for students, fair wages for workers, quality medical care for patients, robust eldercare services, affordable housing for all, and strong social support for vulnerable populations, all while continuously enhancing the citizens’ sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security. At the same time, the Party Central Committee should face up to its own problems and resolutely carry out the fight against corruption in order to guarantee the Party’s continued cleanliness and honesty, fortifying it against all forms of degeneration.
Today, a hundred years from its founding, the Communist Party of China is still in its prime, and remains as determined as ever to achieve lasting greatness for the Chinese nation! The Chinese Communists firmly believe that as long as they are deeply rooted in the people and rely closely on them, they can gain infinite power to move forward through thick and thin, turning the People’s aspirations for a better life today into the reality of tomorrow.
