孙武（约公元前545年—约公元前470年），字长卿，春秋末期齐国乐安（今山东省北部）人。中国春秋时期的军事家、政治家，尊称兵圣或孙子（孙武子），被誉为“百世兵家之师”“东方兵学的鼻祖”。孙武著有巨作《孙子兵法》十三篇，为后世兵法家所推崇，被誉为“兵学圣典”，置于《武经七书》之首。他撰著的《孙子兵法》在中国乃至世界军事史、军事学术史和哲学思想史上都占有极为重要的地位，并在政治、经济、军事、文化、哲学等领域被广泛运用。被译为英文、法文、德文、日文，该书成为国际间有名的兵学典范之书。

Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State.
1. Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State.
2. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.
3. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.
4. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.
5,6. The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger. 
7. Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons.
8. Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death.
9. The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness.
10. Bymethod and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.
