From a humble beginning making wine in his family garage to one of the leading forces of wine production in Rioja, Benjamin Romeo has quickly become one of Spain’s most respected winemakers. Despite only founded recently in 1996, Bodega Contador's quick rise is testament to its superb terroir and its brilliant wines.

History of the Winery

The Contador’s story began in 1996 when Benjamin Romeo made his first vintage, La Cueva del Contador, in the centuries-old cellars of Château San Vicente in Rioja where he also created the first vintage of Contador in 1999.

In the following vintages, his wines were well received by the market and the professionals. So, in 2001, Benjamin Romeo decided to renovate the garage of his parents' house in order to increase the scale of the wine production, and the 2004 and 2005 vintages of Contador produced here were awarded a full score of 100 points by Robert Parker, an honor that was unparalleled in Spain at the time and led the wine brand rise to international fame.

值得一提的是，本杰明在电影院看到的第一部电影是克林特·伊斯特伍德主演的《苍白骑士》（Pale Rider），这部电影给年轻的本杰明留下了一生中不可磨灭的印象，于是他将克林特·伊斯特伍德在电影中戴的那顶非常酷的帽子作为Predicador葡萄酒的酒标。Predicador一经推出，就受到好评，成为康泰多的明星产品之一。

It is worth mentioning that the first movie Benjamin saw in the cinema was "Pale Rider" starring Clint Eastwood, which left an indelible impression on young Benjamin for the rest of his life, and the very cool hat worn by Clint Eastwood in the movie became the label of Predicador. As soon as it was released, the Predicador was highly praised and became one of the star products of Contador.

Terroir & Philosophy

康泰多酒庄位于西班牙北部著名的里奥哈（Rioja）葡萄酒产区。本杰明与设计师赫克托·埃雷拉合作，设计了新的康泰多酒庄，并在2008年的夏至日正式开庄。

Contador is located in La Rioja, a well-known wine region in northern Spain. Benjamin worked with designer Hector Herrera to build the new Bodega Contador which officially opened in the summer solstice of 2008.

本杰明特意用野花或草药作为葡萄园的“天然栅栏”，他认为这些花与香草的香气，会让葡萄在成长的过程中，拥有更多的香气。

Benjamin deliberately used wildflowers and herbs as a natural fence for the vineyards, believing that the aromas of these flowers and plants would give the grapes more fragrance as they grow.

康泰多酒厂有60多个葡萄地块，每个块地都有自己独特的风格、土壤、小气候等，本杰明会根据不同块地的"个性"进行单独管理，这也给予了葡萄酒更多的复杂性。

Bodega Contador has more than 60 plots of vines, each with its own unique style, soil, microclimate, etc. These plots are managed by Benjamin Romeo according to the "personality" of each plot, resulting a complexity to the wines.

从葡萄园到葡萄酒装瓶，本杰明会亲自监督每一个步骤，对细节一丝不苟，这就是康泰多获得如此高评价的原因。

From the vineyard to the bottling, Benjamin personally oversees every step of the process with meticulous attention to detail, and that is the reason why Contador is so highly received by the public.

From Grapes to Wines

葡萄在10月采收后，在冬季葡萄藤会进行修剪，每株葡萄藤仅保留一到两个枝芽，以控制其产量，并保证葡萄的高品质。康泰多葡萄酒的葡萄藤每株可产300克葡萄。这些葡萄园中的葡萄树的平均年龄超过100年，而每三株老葡萄藤才只能酿造一瓶康泰多干红葡萄酒（Contador）葡萄酒。

After the grapes are harvested in October, the vines are pruned during the winter, with one or two branches per vine, in order to control the yield of the vines and to keep high quality fruit. The vines produce 300 grams of grapes per vine for the Contador wines. The average age of the vines in these vineyards is over 100 years, and only one bottle of Contador can be made from every three old vines.

葡萄由人工采摘，并在30分钟内运到酒庄，尽量减少氧化，以确保葡萄的新鲜度。葡萄去梗后，会进行手工挑选，以保留最优质的果实，筛选后的葡萄会在大型的10,000升锥形法国橡木容器中发酵。

The grapes are harvested by hand and delivered to the winery within 30 minutes, minimizing oxidation during the process to ensure the freshness of the grapes. The grapes are de-stemmed and then hand-selected to ensure maximum quality. The selected grapes are then fermented in large 10,000 liter conical French oak vessels.

发酵过程中会进行严格控温。发酵阶段结束后，酒液会在法国橡木桶中陈酿10-20个月，具体时间会根据酒款风格而定。

The fermentation process is strictly controlled by temperature. After the fermentation stage, the wine will be aged in French oak barrels for 10-20 months, depending on the style.

由西班牙最具影响力的葡萄酒评论家和行业领袖何塞·佩宁（José Penín）创立的《佩宁指南》（Penin Guide to Spanish Wine）最近已将康泰多的葡萄酒纳入其2022年指南，并获得了95分以上的高分。

The Penin Guide to Spanish Wine, founded by one of the most influential Spanish wine critics and industry leader José Peín, also recently included Contador's wines in its 2022 guide and received a score of 95+.
