Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was an American poet. Her poetry was concise and innovative, often disregarding meter and even grammar. She published only ten poems during her lifetime, remaining largely unknown until nearly 70 years after her death, when she began to receive serious attention from the literary world and was recognized as a pioneer by modernist poets. Along with her contemporary Walt Whitman, she is considered one of America's greatest poets, and her poetic art, life, and sexuality have been the subject of much speculation.
